The site of this country home has shoreline on Connecticut’s deepest lake and is located within a wetland. The design utilizes the footprint and envelope of an existing cottage. The interior layout is centered around a fireplace – the interiors invite reading, napping, and creative activities. Locally reclaimed stone and wood were chosen to ground the cottage to its place and history. The design utilizes found objects such as stone sinks to further connect with the area’s history. Restoration of the wetland is accomplished by the planting of native species and through the removal of lawn. The lake, a stone firepit, and an exterior dining area are connected to the cottage via elevated wood walkways. The lake house is intended to create days of purpose for a family of four.
